Period Proof Underwear

I have always suffered with very heavy, irregular and unpredictable periods since my first day of secondary school. As my teenage years went on I suffered more and more with symptoms of pain, fatigue, bloating and nausea which all seemed to relate to my monthlys. I was back and forth to the doctors as it was starting to have a negative effect on my life. To begin with I was told it was just “very bad periods” along with potential infections, maybe IBS or crohns and was put on the contraceptive pill to try to regulate and reduce the severity and length of my periods. Infact I was tried on about 5 or 6 different pills as none of them really helped me in a positive way.

After over 10 years of suffering and wondering what the hell was wrong with me, the condition affecting my life and relationships and I’m pretty sure now my mental state. Being a very active, naturally happy girl I was able to push through with the condition and keep pretty active and upbeat most of the time though. Then in my early 20’s I sadly had a miscarriage it was off the back of this event that I had more in-depth examinations. Endometriosis was suspected and after undergoing a laparoscopy they found extensive Endometriosis lesions and scarring in my system. Upsetting as this news was to hear to be diagnosed with a chronic illness, it also strangely brought a little sense of relief.

Fast forward a couple of years with the endometriosis still affecting my everyday life I was put under different gynae specialists. I was advised to have a hysterectomy due to the extent of my condition. To hear this news at such a young age and being someone who had always wanted a family of my own this news was too much to digest. I didn’t take that option, instead I chose to try to ignore my condition completely, I didn’t speak about it, I didn’t address it in anyway, I just couldn’t.

The day came when I had to pull my head out of my butt and address this! There must be other ways I can help to manage my condition without such life changing surgery. This is when I threw myself into nutrition studies and exercise. Learning the benefits of structured healthy balanced living, positive effects exercise can have on the body, how stress can negatively impact the condition. The learning and trial and error was endless. I was inspired so much I studied nutrition and training and soon qualified as a personal trainer as I wanted to share my passion to help others.

The learning and trial and error was endless. I was inspired so much I studied nutrition and training and soon qualified as a personal trainer as I wanted to share my passion to help others.

I took the training maybe a little to the extreme and competed in bodybuilding and fitness competitions, pretty successfully I might add! Turning pro and competing in America, my 2 goals for this part of my life happily ticked off! I knew that competing long term would be too much stress on an already fighting body so this had to come to an end. Infact my body very much told me it had enough when my adrenals nearly gave up on me and a rush to hospital and a lengthy recovery afterwards told me enough was enough, time to hang up the bikini, heels and tan! I will always hold much pride and sense of achievement for these years. My focus from then until this very day is to look after myself, to feel as well as I possibly can and to manage my Endometriosis symptoms in the most natural ways possible. This comes in the form of nutrition, exercise and lifestyle much of which I speak about in my other blogs. I always hold the hope that one day I will be lucky enough to have a baby, this is a working progress!

Anything I can put in place to take the stress out of the condition is a massive positive for me. I have my protocols in place for when I have flare ups. Hot water bottles, essential oils, knowing what food and drinks to keep to a minimum in this time to avoid further pain and bloating, learning to rest! The rest is the hardest thing for me as I feel like I’m “giving in” to the condition. Moving my business online means I can still make a positive impact and fulfil my purpose even if I’m on the sofa smothered in essential oil and hot water bottles!

A big stress for me when exercising or out and about for the day is the chance of an unpredictable bleeding, or if it is the time of the month having leakage. For any lady with heavy unpredictable periods they will know the anxiety and upset this can bring. I always used to carry a spare pair of leggings with me when I was a personal trainer “just incase”. I had a couple of occasions where I had to rush home and cancel clients due to leakage. One product that has completely taken this stress off me is period proof underwear form Modibodi. When I came across their products I couldn’t quite understand how they worked or believed they would work for me!

I wear the Modibodi leggings when training at the time of the month or if I feel I may have an inspected bleed just as a back up. This takes a huge worry off me. They are so comfortable. As I mentioned before I suffer with bloating, a lot! The leggings are high waisted so this helps to take away from feeling self conscious about the lower belly bloat or “Endo Belly”.The Modibodi underwear is a god send! For a long while I have struggled to use tampons, my body started to reject them and I found them so uncomfortable. I refused to wear pads or towels in the day due to being in gym leggings so much and feeling self conscious they would show. Also I just felt towels and pads made me feel unclean and uncomfortable especially when exercising. It’s so easy to throw on the Modibodi knickers and get on with my day and night! They are reusable and super easy to clean and care for. With no waste to the environment either unlike other forms of period protection which is a huge positive.

How do Modibodi work?

Save me trying to explain the technology, here it is straight from the Modibodiwebsite:

Made super-slim – only 3mm thick – it’s hard to believe our Modifier Technology™ can hold up to 20ml or up to 4 tampons worth. We bring the comfiness, so you can bring it!

  • The top layer quickly wicks away moisture, fights bacteria and stops smells, so you stay dry and fresh
  • The middle layer safely absorbs fluid and locks it away (2.5-20mls depending on the flow you go with)
  • The bottom layer is extra waterproof protection, so you’re super secure and sassy as always

Ladies if you haven’t tried period proof underwear or leggings give them a go. Honestly wish I had these products in my life years ago! Thank you Modibodi!

Much Love and Health,

Kelly xx
